KAREN DOSANJH
Karen Dosanjh is a Canadian-born historian and author of Untold Stories: The South Asian Pioneer Experience in BC which captures a pivotal time in our collective history. Through her extensive research on early Sikh settlers and their families, Karen documented and preserved the forgotten voices of the first wave of migrants from Punjab, India to Canada in the early 1900s. Her book chronicles the historic milestones for Sikhs in Canada and uncovers dark times such as the racial barriers they faced as they persevered to establish their families in their new homeland. Untold Stories leaves a legacy to educate and inspire future generations about the journey of the Indian diaspora and the significant contributions they made to chart a path to Canada and the US. Karen has worked tirelessly to bring Sikh-centric stories to students who greatly benefit from culturally significant content in their classrooms.
Preserving pioneer history is in her blood as Karen’s forefather Gian Singh Johal migrated to Canada in 1906 to establish her paternal family’s longstanding roots in Canada. Her husband’s paternal grandfather Narain Singh Dosanjh migrated in 1907 and grandmother, Maha Kaur Dosanjh in 1929, becoming one of the first five Sikh families to reside in New Westminster, BC.
Karen has built an esteemed reputation as a trusted professional and expert in marketing, communications & public relations throughout her 25-year career. As Vice-President, Marketing & Communications, Karen leads the global strategy for OSI Digital, a leading provider of business and technology solutions for Fortune 500 companies around the world.
Karen collaborated on producing a documentary with Sikhlens which was filmed in British Columbia, Canada. Hidden Histories: Pioneer Sikhs in Canada will be featured at this year’s Sikhlens Arts and Film Festival.
Films to be screened at Red Carpet Night include:
UPROOTED tells the story of one Sikh family who fled Punjab for France after the attack of 1984. Years later the country they once found solace in has enacted a turban ban, which forces the family to fight for the right to express their Sikh identity.
HIDDEN HISTORIES: PIONEER SIKHS IN CANADA
Karen Dosanjh’s book Untold Stories: The South Asian Pioneer Experience in BC (British Columbia) has been adapted into a documentary. Hidden Histories: Pioneer Sikhs in Canada showcases the historic milestones of the first South Asians who migrated from India to Canada. The documentary covers the arrival of South Asians in the early 1900s and the rampant anti-Asian sentiments they faced to the key events that led to the disenfranchisement of the early settlers. It also reveals the untold stories of Canadian immigration bans and other discriminatory actions that hindered the basic citizens’ rights of the South Asian pioneers.
ORKA KING
Harbhajan Singh, founder of Samra Produce, is America’s “king of okra.”. The film details the story of Harbhajan Singh who came to Southern California in 1985 as a trained agronomist, with a master’s degree in economics. He saw California as ideal for growing the kind of Indian specialties that he ate as a child–okra, eggplant, bitter melon, and beans. His success reflects a broader reality in the nation’s produce market. As ethnic populations, and interest in ethnic food, grow across the country, so do the opportunities for entrepreneurs like Harbhajan Singh.
AMERICAN SIKH PROJECT
Eight years after the Project S film Red, White and Beard Chapman film graduate Ryan Westra collaborates with the subject of the film Vishavjit Singh in the making of the animated film American Sikh.
SUPREME MOTHERHOOD: THE JOURNEY OF MATA SAHIB (ANIMATED)
Supreme Motherhood: The Journey of Mata Sahib Kaur is a visual, musical, and historical masterpiece that will be screening at Sikhlens 2022 film festival. This pioneering animated movie reveals the untold epic life story of Mata Sahib Kaur (forever immortalized as the Mother of the Khalsa). After her husband, Guru Gobind Singh Ji, departed from Earth, he left her in charge of the Khalsa nation for 40 years. The movie explores her spiritual and temporal leadership qualities, as well as the socio-religious contributions she made to society during the oppressive Mughal reign of the 17th Century, which was one of the most turbulent times the country has ever witnessed.

Event Details
Our annual film festival is back at its two theater homes, Dodge College and The Frida Cinema for 3 days of celebration in Sikh arts, books and films. Starting off with a red carpeted event at Dodge College’s Folino Theater for an Opening Night with Sikhlens film shorts and a special animated feature.
Then two full days of movies, from morning till evening at The Frida Cinema in nearby Downtown Santa Ana. We’re bringing back a favorite—a special session called Creative Sikhs, with Sikhs in the creative arts industry on stage for a Q&A session. Ask questions and learn from their journeys in film and literature. Then sprinkled throughout both days, we have short films submitted to us from filmmakers around the world.
And finally, ending both days we have full-featured movies; three to choose from: Donkeyhead, Baajre Da Sitta, and Qismat 2.

Session Program
THE FORGOTTEN SOLDIER
Why would someone vandalize a war memorial? When veteran Aatma Singh witnesses The Lions of the Great War monument being vandalized, his family jump to their own conclusions and seek revenge. Their actions end in terrible consequences.
BATTLE OF AMRITSAR
This film looks to the Battle of Amritsar as a guiding light to the future rather than a painful memory of the past. By connecting viewers with the spirit of Sikh struggles embodied by the warriors, the film is a soulful exploration of a momentous event in Sikh history. Based on interviews of those present throughout the battle, the film will take a deeper look at what the Battle of Amritsar means for the Sikh panth through the eyes of those who witnessed and participated directly.
While many documentaries and videos have been produced revolving around June 1984, many have been plagued by the influence of state propaganda or have focused on outlining the technical details and immediate sequence of events leading up to the battle. Instead, this documentary stands out as one which goes much deeper than merely seeking to justify or contextualize Sikh resistance.
Interlaced with powerful archival footage, a traditional Sikh soundscape, and soul-piercing poetry, this film is an artistic tapestry that seeks to capture the soul of Sikh resistance.
Facing a myriad of similar challenges and provocations today, the film revisits the Battle of Amritsar from a Sikh perspective to learn from those gurmukhs (Guru-oriented beings) about how to face our situation today with similar clarity and fortitude.

Manpreet Dhillon – Filmmaker
MANPREET DHILLON
Born in Punjab-India, I always feel lucky to spend the first 20 years of my life at a home surrounded by farms and nature. Being born in a Punjabi Jatt Sikh Family, I was supposed to ask my parents for a Motorbike when I turned 18, but instead I asked for a computer. I wanted to learn more, I wanted more experience and more skills. So, my parents bought me a computer and every day when I sit on my computer, I will do something creative and new. This process kept going on for years and I taught myself entertainment industry software like Photoshop, Premiere and After Effects. I was not great in them, but I was sparked enough to learn more of it.
I moved to Australia in 2014 where I completed my Bachelor of Aviation and gained Permanent Residency. I did not manage to find any work ion Aviation and then I applied for Western Australia Police Force. I just needed something to stabilize my life while I freely think about making films. I have been working as a Police Officer for last 4 years but meanwhile I have been very passionately chasing my dream of becoming a filmmaker. I am now studying parttime as a Filmmaker Student in Perth and always being surrounded with like-minded people. I have worked as a Director/Editor on the projects mentioned below. The following films I have directed and edited so far include Yaarian, Agla Savera , Immortal , Slayers, Enough and Jaagdi Neend.

An exceptional tale of how allowing others’ chosen beliefs to interfere can rob oneself of living a full and joy filled life. Completely relatable no matter what tribe you are, which religion you believe in or where you live. They share the tragedy of daily life experiences, when a relative is terminal and everybody’s “busy” lives are interrupted by death of the patriarch.

FROM HERE
From Here is a hopeful story of artists and activists based in Berlin and New York whose lives hang in the balance of immigration and integration debates. Our protagonists move from their 20s into their 30s as they fight for citizenship, start families, and find room for creative expression. This sensitive and nuanced documentary captures their journeys to define what it means to “belong” in societies that are increasingly hostile to their existence. Filmed over a decade in two of the world’s largest immigration countries–the U.S. and Germany–their individual stories echo the millions of young people from immigrant families coming of age during this era of rising nationalism. FROM HERE showcases not only their struggles, but enormous power.

KARTARPUR CORRIDOR-COLLECTIVE MEMORIES, CONNECTED HISTORIES
This film tells the story of how the communities of India and Pakistan, who parted into two countries a long time ago, have been taking care of each other’s cultural heritage that was left on the other side of the border with love and respect.
In 1947 the year when two independent nations were created – India and Pakistan. The borders of Punjab on the west and Bengal on the east witnessed large scale migration of communities, the Muslim population moved into Pakistan and Hindus, Sikhs, and others, into India. Communities were uprooted from their homes. They brought with them memories of lost lands, culture, and associations. In a recent joint effort of both the governments, Pakistan and India, a ‘corridor’ has been created as a passage for the Sikh community to visit a very important religious shrine in Pakistan, Kartarpur, the place associated with Guru Nanak (the first Guru of the Sikhs spent last 18 years of his life) without a visa. This is the first time since 1947, that effort has been made by the two countries, India, and Pakistan to use the power of cultural heritage for building peace and understanding. The film shows the engagement of the local community in taking care of the heritage of the ‘other’ as a service. It further challenges the notion of whose heritage is it in times of displacement – and the relationship between cultural heritage and the local community, those ‘displaced’ and further the ‘relocated’.
TILLA JOGIAN
Before partition, there were numerous religious hubs in India and Pakistan, but after many of these sites became deserted. The primary purpose of this short film is to showcase such religious places to create intercultural and inter-religious harmony among the people of India and Pakistan to ensure peace and friendly relationship across borders.
GOING HOME: TRAVELS IN THE LOST HOMELAND
Sikhs lost their homeland when, in 1947, Punjab was partitioned and divided between two newly created nations, Pakistan and India. What would it feel like for Sikhs to visit the land their ancestors left behind in Pakistan, where the major portion of their historical, cultural, and religious heritage is located today? Join Sikhlens as they experience a flood of mixed emotions as they tour the land of their forefathers for the first time.
