Firanghis at the Court of Lahore

Bobby Singh Bansal

The 2016 Sikhpoint Calendar is Firanghis at the Court of Lahore, drawn from the research of British Sikh historian, writer, and filmmaker Bobby Singh Bansal. His 2010 book The Lion's Firanghis: Europeans at the Court of Lahore charts European officers who served Maharaja Ranjit Singh.

Bansal has visited Pakistan since 1989. He became president of the Sarkar Khalsa Foundation, which has worked on conservation of Sikh monuments in India and Pakistan, including the tomb of Maharaja Sher Singh in Lahore. His documentaries include The Sikhs of Kabul, screened at the British Houses of Parliament, and The Road to Mandalay on the Burmese Sikhs.

January opens with General Jean Francois Allard (1785-1839), a Napoleonic officer who reached Ranjit's dominions in 1822, reorganized the cavalry, and later raised the Fauj-i-Khas, a 6,000-strong royal brigade flying French tricolours inscribed Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh.
