Sikh Turban and Identity
Amit Amin and Naroop Jhooti
The 2018 Sikhlens Calendar is Sikh Turban and Identity, photography by Amit Amin and Naroop Jhooti, presented with the Sikh Coalition. Born and raised in West London, they teamed up in 2005. They built a career in music, advertising, and portraiture, including Tinie Tempah, Riz Ahmed, Ricky Gervais, and campaigns for Barclays, Samsung, and MTV.
Their most personal project turned the camera on members of the Sikh community. The Sikh Coalition, America's largest Sikh civil rights organization, saw the UK exhibition and brought them to the United States to photograph 38 new Sikh portraits for The Sikh Project, launched in New York City in September 2015 for the Coalition's 15th anniversary. Those portraits and stories reached over 20 million Americans.
The cover is Bikram Singh, born in Delhi in 1992, moved to the US in 2000, later working in New York in real estate information for a major investment bank.
