Bapu Surat Singh
Since February 2015, I had been watching the struggle of Bapu Surat Singh, who has been on hunger strike for over a year in order to highlight the abuses of the Indian government in Punjab and to free Sikh political prisoners. Like most people, I felt quite helpless about what I could do to raise awareness.
I was contacted by City Sikhs in mid 2015 to take part in an exhibition to raise awareness of Bapu Surat Singh and his mission. I then decided to do this drawing as I felt it was the one image that really symbolises the journey, and the strength and determination needed to persevere through the hardships that he is going through.
The exhibition has already taken place at Birmingham Gurdwara. It is next going around other gurdwaras in the UK, and there should also be an exhibition held at a gallery in London at some point in the future. The exhibition also showcased other artists’ artwork as well, which showed me that the creative talent we have in our community is alive and strong.
