Lifeline And Playtime
These two drawings titled 'Lifeline’ and ‘Playtime’ were part of an exhibition I had called 'Opposites Attract'. The aim of this exhibition was to display drawings that are completely different to each other and are about opposite emotions or meanings. But once these artworks are displayed side by side, both drawings then take on another dimension and ultimately the difference's then complement each other.
Separately, each of these drawings work on their own. 'Lifeline' is a drawing of a thirsty Indian boy drinking water from a pump, whereas Playtime is a drawing of children innocently playing with water in the western world. But, when put together, the drawings then take on a different meaning.
These drawings together are meant to show the different attitudes to water around the world. One of the things that has always intrigued me is the huge difference in wealth and access to resources between the developed worlds and the third world countries, especially access to clean water.
In the developed world, water is taken for granted, hence the children in ‘Playtime’ are happily playing and wasting clean water. This includes myself as I would play with water all the time when I was younger. Thus the drawing ‘Lifeline’, of the little Indian boy drinking from the pump, takes on another dimension, and represents how valuable water is in the developing world. Clean water is a necessity that should not be wasted.
