“Not only has India sent some of her best troops to fight for the Empire, but she is also bearing the expense. The Indians came over in September, 1914, and were encamped for a time in the South of France. They have done splendid service in the trenches.”

“The people of France could not do enough for them [Indian Expeditionary Force].

They cheered and shouted, broke into their ranks, and heaped gifts on them… Not a few of the Sikhs, lithe, black-bearded giants, were deeply concerned to know if I thought the war would be over before they could get to grips with the common enemy, and it was a burden off their minds when assured them there was absolutely no likelihood of anything of the kind coming to pass.”
