Garden conservation Summer Palace, Rambagh Garden, Amritsar, District Amritsar

The Rambagh Garden complex included a swimming bath for the ladies of the royal household (the hamam) and small palaces for the Chiefs. On three sides of the main palace were two-storied structures presumably to lodge the most trusted sardars of the Maharaja. Several baradaris, small but exquisite structures, adorned the enclosed complex that was surrounded by a thick mud wall and a moat.

The outer gate of the Rambagh Palace was in this wall, and was connected with the inner gate in the masonry wall. A monument to the taste of the Maharaja the Rambagh Palace served as a source of inspiration for the nobility. Maharaja Ranjit Singh used the central building as a country house during his visits to Amritsar on the festivals of Baisakhi, Diwali, and Dussehra.

Both the garden and buildings were constructed under the supervision of Faqir Aziz-ud-Din, Sardar Desa Singh, and Sardar Lehna Singh Majithia. The red-stone work of all these buildings, including what is referred to as the western structure, was executed by workmen brought from Delhi by Faqir Aziz-ud-Din. Contractor: Mr. Suresh Chandra.
