Raja Hamir Singh Samadhi, Nabha District Patiala
Raja Hamir Singh was a descendant of the Phul Dynasty who established the sovereign states of Patiala, Jind, and Nabha. He founded the town of Nabha in 1755, which comprised a walled city entered through 5 gateways. In the heart of the walled city is located a fortified palace called the Quila Mubarak (the auspicious fort).
The Samadhi (shrine) of Raja Hamir Singh, lies in close proximity to this fort. It is presently in a residential neighborhood and is maintained by the local community. The site was covered with vegetation; and over the years had been repaired by the local community with materials, which were incompatible with the traditional materials.
The conservation work included restoration of the Samadhi and landscaping of the courtyard in a manner so as to create a community space. Many local masons were trained in the use of traditional materials in the course of the conservation project. This project led to many other conservation projects in the historic town.
