The Singh Twins

The 2008 Sikhpoint Calendar is Sikhs in Print, a selection of historical printed imagery from the Twin Studio Sikh Print Archive of Amrit and Rabindra Singh. It looks at western interest in the Sikhs and Punjab from the early 19th to the mid 20th century: the Sikh Raj, the British Raj, the two World Wars, and Indian Independence.

Most images come from journals, documentary, and literary sources made for a European, mostly British, readership. Some carry an imperial or Orientalist viewpoint. They still show how Sikhs were pictured, and which European and Sikh artists were working then.

The archive, begun in 1990 as Ph.D. research, holds several hundred original artefacts: stamps, posters, stereoviews, maps, postcards, and collectors' cards. It records how Sikh imagery changed as print technology changed.
